Boho at an outdoor wedding does not start with pampas on Pinterest. It starts with a place that is not pretending to be a ballroom. At Szumilas in Bydgoszcz the backdrop is a tipi tent, a forest and the light, and the décor has to hold that together, not shout over it. We asked Zaplecione Dekoracje how that works in practice. Vows by the lake, under a tree or on the glade

At Szumilas the ceremony does not have to stand next to the tent merely because that is convenient for the chairs. There are three natural backdrops — the pond, a tree and the glade — and Zaplecione set frames, arches, hexagons, chairs and an aisle, and sometimes they leave the tree itself. Guests comment most often on the vows under the tree.

The rule that returns with every outdoor setup: do not compete with nature. A hexagonal frame with macramé works because the water and the forest are the real backdrop, not another wall. Structures have to be stable. Wind outdoors is not an exception. It is a working condition.

The tipi entrance — the first frame guests see

Before anyone sits down they walk through the entrance. At Szumilas that is its own zone, not a threshold. Zaplecione return to this frame often: pampas baskets, a rug, candles, a “Welcome” board. Tables, macramé and flowers that do not fight the tent

Full wedding styling, as Zaplecione describe it, joins the character of the place with the couple. Lightness, coherence, an individual feel — and the same thinking inside the tent and at the ceremony. Macramé appears as a wall behind the top table or at the vows. Every floral piece is different. Motifs couples love (the entrance, a chill zone with deckchairs) come back, but they are always recut to fit.

Materials that last an outdoor evening: wood, dried grasses, fabrics, weather-proof candles. Fresh plants only if they will survive the day. Neon in a tipi either dies or fights the string lights. The couple’s palette leads. The season may suggest species; it does not get to dictate colour. Autumn can still be pink and beige, just with what is growing then.

Light in the tipi is décor

Wind, rain and what couples forget

Outdoors does not forgive the hope that weather “will somehow be fine”. In wind: electric candles, secured fabrics, discreetly weighted structures. In rain Zaplecione do not rebuild the whole look at the last minute. Outdoor pieces can move under the terrace, the rest into the tent. The party does not have to fall apart because it rained during the vows.

Two things couples forget most often: mosquito spray in summer and matching umbrellas. It does not sound glamorous. Guests remember bites longer than another vase.

If people stay overnight, the party here usually runs until four. The grounds are already lit. Extra night décor comes only if asked for — it is not a mandatory second set.

The decorator’s timeline

Setup starts around 9:00. Ready: about an hour before the ceremony. That leaves time to photograph the empty, finished space. It is the last quiet hour before guests arrive — and often the cleanest frames of the day. Dismantling after guests leave. If ceremony pieces have to disappear during the party, they come down quietly, not in front of the first dance.

The last décor conversation should happen about three weeks before the wedding: final guest list, table plan, whether the couple wants a photo corner. Tables are dressed before catering arrives. Guest book, Instax, small extras — earlier, not “if a moment remains”.

Budget: where not to cut

Asked what can be dropped at 80–100 percent of budget, Zaplecione turn the question around: there is no line that is “not worth paying for” if it holds the whole together. If the number has to fall, a sensible cut is dried flowers instead of large fresh installations — not giving up coherence between the entrance, the tables and the ceremony. Fewer shapes, repeated with intent, beat three styles at one wedding.

A wedding under the stars is lightness and nature, not excess. What matters most is a shared vision with the couple.
